1916 United States Naval Academy Graduation Ring belonging to Rear Admiral Dennis Leo Ryan (January 14th, 1894 - February 8, 1966). This ring was discovered by the consignor while metal detecting at Croatan Sound in Manteo, NC. It was buried approximately 4 feet below the sandy surface. The discovery of this ring is a wonderful historical metal detecting find. It is not known how the ring came to be buried at Croatan Sound or just how long it may have sat buried below the earth.
RADM Ryan is the first graduate of Annapolis from the State of Arizona. Following graduation, Ryan went on to serve 34 years in the Navy. His distinguished career included service in both World Wars. He was awarded the Legion Of Merit as commander of amphibious transports at Okinawa.
In 1931 he participated in a Navy war game which launched a mock air strike at Pearl Harbor.
He also served as command of one of the first destroyers in the Icelandic zone. During his command, on April 10th, 1941, the USS Niblack (DD-424) neared the coast after picking up survivors from a torpedoed merchantman when a German U-boat was detected preparing to attack. Ryan ordered a depth charge attack on the U-boat, driving it off and saving the ship. This bloodless battle is considered the first action between American and German forces in WWII.
He saw action in the Pacific during WWII where he took part in three Pacific landings, including Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines. He was also involved in transporting the first occupation troops to Japan.
During his time in the Navy, he earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering at Columbia University.
He retired in 1946 after 34 years of service.
The 14k yellow gold ring is inscribed in script to the inside "Dennis Leo Ryan", "United States Navy", and stamped "151 GORHAM CO. 14K". The outside is inscribed "1916" to one side and "Naval Academy" to the opposite. Weight: 21.9 grams.
