An excellent high-grade collection of Broomhandle Pistols, including Mauser, Astra, and Shansei will sell in Centurion's October 2015 Firearm Auction. Most of the Broomhandles consigned to sell in the October firearm auction are in 95% or better condition
and are primarily consigned from a single South Florida estate firearm collection.
A rather distinct sidearm, having a wooden holster which encapsulates the pistol, and then also doubles as the stock (this stock came later and was not part of the original design). Also a box magazine in front of the trigger, long barrel, and namesake grip. The Broomhandle appeared on the scene in 1896, and although it had a unique appearance, the Broomhandle quickly became recognized and respected as a trusted weapon of choice. The Broomhandle became so popular, that manufacture of the pistol began in many countries, from Germany to China. It was produced in both semi-auto and full-auto models. Most of the production was in Germany, Spain, and China.
The Broomhandle was the creation of the Feederle brothers (Fidel, Friedrich, and Josef), with Fidel being a senior employee in one of Paul Mauser's workshops. Even though Mauser himself was not fond of the Broomhandle, he identified the possible business benefits of the Broomhandle and thus allowed production to begin in his Oberndorf-Necker factory. The Broomhandle was originally marketed as the "Mauser Military Pistol" and focused on securing military contracts. This being said, the military market did not adapt to the Broomhandle, but the civilian commercial market loved the pistol. Popularity of the Broomhandle continued to grow, and this began a very long and prosperous period for those manufacturing Broomhandles.
To this day, Broomhandles are widely sought-after and collected.
Centurion Auctions will sell a nice selection of Broomhandle pistols, magazines, and holsters / scabbards in the October 2015 Militaria & Firearm Auction.
